Why Is My New Concrete Driveway Already Cracking?
A driveway that's already showing cracks a few months — or even a few weeks — after the pour is one of the most common concrete complaints out there, and the causes fall into a short list of usual suspects.
Normal shrinkage cracking
All concrete shrinks slightly as it cures and loses moisture. Control joints — the straight cut or tooled lines you see across a driveway — exist specifically to give that shrinkage a place to crack in a straight, planned line instead of a random one. NRMCA's CIP 4 bulletin on cracking and CIP 6 bulletin on joints in slabs on grade are the standard industry references for this behavior. A hairline crack that follows a joint, or appears close to one, is usually this — cosmetic, expected, and not a sign anything went wrong.
An inconsistent base underneath
Cracks that don't follow joint lines, that step (one side of the crack sits higher than the other), or that appear alongside a dip or low spot usually trace back to the base, not the concrete mix. If the compacted base under the slab wasn't uniform — a common risk on Central Florida's sandy soil if it wasn't properly consolidated — parts of the slab can settle at different rates, and the slab cracks to accommodate that movement. Wire mesh instead of rebar
Wire mesh is light and easy to push out of position during the pour, and once it's not centered in the slab — sitting near the bottom instead of mid-depth — it does very little to hold a crack together once one starts. Rebar, set on chairs and tied in place, is more likely to stay where it was placed. This is exactly why some jurisdictions won't accept wire mesh alone for a vehicle-bearing driveway. The two questions we can, and can't, fully answer
Are hairline cracks in a new driveway normal?
Fine cracks that appear inside or near a control joint, without stepping or visible movement, are typically shrinkage cracking — a well-documented, common occurrence as concrete cures (see NRMCA's CIP 4 bulletin on cracking). They're usually cosmetic. Cracks that widen, step up on one side, or keep appearing away from joints point toward a base or reinforcement issue instead.
Does Florida's heat make new concrete crack more?
This is genuinely unclear from the research we could find. The general concrete-science principle — hot, dry conditions can speed up surface drying and increase the risk of plastic shrinkage cracking if curing isn't managed carefully — is well established. Whether Florida's specific combination of heat and humidity makes local driveways crack meaningfully more than concrete poured elsewhere isn't something we found a study confirming. Treat the mechanism as plausible and the Florida-specific claim as unconfirmed.
